GIZ: Making dense farming content easy to learn on a phone

The Challenge

The CLM project’s learning content for development agents was bulky and hard to understand. Development agents teach other farmers, so the content they learn from has to be clear first. Bulky print binders and abstract presentations made retention low in rural field stations.

What We Built

More than 40 modules on basic soil and water conservation methods, such as vermicomposting, grass strips, green manure and intercropping, and on beekeeping. We made the content clearer and more inviting, and split it into small chunks so no module overwhelmed the learner. It was delivered as a package that opens directly on a phone and works offline.

How We Worked

We ran the project through our ABLE methodology: restructuring dense technical material into short, actionable pieces, designing the narrative story and visual storyboard, then building interactive modules and testing rigorously with field agents before rollout.

The Result

More than 2,000 development agents trained, each of whom trains other farmers, so the learning reaches well beyond them. GIZ asked for this project after seeing our work on another engagement, achieving high field completion rates and enthusiastic agent adoption.

“The interactive modules made our field guidelines accessible to agents who previously struggled with bulky print manuals. The learning design solved our retention problem.” — Capacity Building Advisor, GIZ Regional Programs

ACE Advisors: Designing with people, not for them

The Challenge

ACE Advisors supports SMEs, investors and public institutions in Ethiopia. Its analysts were strong on data and desk research, but wanted a practical way to understand users first and adapt solutions to the local context. Most of the analysts surveyed beforehand had no prior human-centered design training.

What We Built

Over about two months, mostly in person with some online sessions, we ran seven modules: human-centered design, empathy mapping, user personas, user research, ideation, prototyping and user testing. Every module ended with an activity, and every activity built toward one case, “Empowering Women-Owned SMEs in Addis Ababa,” told through two characters, Marta and Amina, and an animated video we produced. On Miro, analysts built personas and empathy maps, grouped their findings into three themes (lack of finance, no tailored support, programs that aren’t user friendly), and presented to real SMEs. We used questionnaires before and after.

How We Worked

One continuous story ran through all seven modules. Theory was ruthlessly cut down to what the case needed, while interactive games and music kept sessions engaging, vibrant, and active.

The Result

Analysts left with a worked case and solution ideas they had tested in front of real SMEs, and ACE’s analysts went on to apply the approach on work for particular enterprise clients. In the closing poll, “empathy” was the single most common takeaway.

“SINQ took our analysts from abstract design thinking theory to real-world empathy and practical SME presentations. The animated characters and case activities made the concepts stick.” — Engagement Lead, ACE Advisors

IRIF program: Ten modules, each fitted to its audience

The Challenge

IRIF (Intelligence, Resilience, Innovative Farming) is a farming program with a technology platform run by Birrama Digital Commerce and Farm Africa overseeing the whole initiative on behalf of the funder WRI/P4G. It needed comprehensive training materials for groups with very different skills, literacy limits, and operational realities: trainers and extension workers, farmers, and project staff.

What We Built

Ten modules, written from scratch, on topics including pest and disease management, smart irrigation systems, soil detection and testing, the core challenges the program addresses, and gender inclusion. They were authored in English first as print documents, with translations into Amharic, Afaan Oromo and other regional languages to follow.

How We Worked

The hardest part was fitting each module to what its specific audience could and couldn’t do. We crafted visual diagrammatic walk-throughs for farmers with limited literacy, structured facilitation guides for field extension workers, and strategic data frameworks for project managers.

The Result

Ten complete, vetted modules successfully delivered and ready for regional implementation across farm demonstration clusters. Samples can be shared upon discovery review.

“Training materials tailored from the ground up for extension workers and farmers alike. SINQ understood that different audiences need radically different learning approaches.” — Birrama Digital Commerce & Farm Africa Team
